You probably have your pumpkin(s) picked out and ready to carve. Halloween is drawing ever closer! So here is a list of the top ten ways to use all of those pumpkin guts, instead of just throwing them in the disposal.

Beyond the traditional uses for pumpkin guts, it also has some very great benefits. Pumpkin is a squash, and can be used in baking recipes, but also in lotions and potions. Did you know, it’s great to help fight wrinkles? So here we go, with the top 10 list…

1. Traditional – Roasting the pumpkin seeds. Very tasty, and you can add different spices to enhance the flavor even more.
2. Serve them mashed. – If the flavor is too strong, mix it with potato
3. Bird Feed – Dry out the seeds, and feed to your neighborhood birds
4. Brains – Take out the seeds, and add some red coloring. Voila – you’ve got brains. Great for haunted house or Halloween games.
5. Treats for your pet – Rabbits or Guinea pigs
6. Make some Puking Pumpkins!!! Set up the jack-o-lantern, so that it is puking guts down your front step.
7. Puree, and use in your favorite pumpkin recipe. Use fresh pumpkin instead of canned. Has less sugar, and more nutrients.
8. Pumpkin facial scrub – makes skin smooth, and helps lessen wrinkles.

1. Chocolate & Peanut Butter Dipped Apples

Ingredients

* 10 to 12 medium apples, stems removed
* 10 to 12 wooden popsicle sticks
* 1 cup HERSHEY’S SPECIAL DARK Chocolate Chips or HERSHEY’S Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
* 1-2/3 cups (10-oz. pkg.) REESE’S Peanut Butter Chips, divided
* 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons shortening, divided (do not use butter, margarine, spread or oil)

2. HALLOWEEN SPIDERS

1 (12 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
1 med. can of chow mein noodles (may not need all of them)
1 pkg. M & M candy

Melt chocolate in microwave. Stir in noodles. Drop by spoonfuls onto waxed paper. Add 2 M & M’s for spider eyes. NOTE: Add 2 to 4 tablespoons water, if needed, to thin chocolate.

Ingredient list -

  • 3 cups (500 mL) cranberry juice
  • 1-1/2 cups (250 mL) apple juice
  • 1-1/2 cups (250 mL) grape juice
  • 2 cups (500 mL) caffeine-free cola
  • 1 cup (250 mL) frozen strawberries

5. Yummy Mummy Cookies
Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup HERSHEY’S Cocoa
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup HERSHEY’S Mini Chips Semi-Sweet Chocolate
  • 1 to 2 packages (12 oz. each) HERSHEY’S Premium White Chips
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons shortening(do not use butter, margarine, spread or oil)
  • Additional HERSHEY’S Mini Chips Semi-Sweet Chocolate

6.  Deviled Mice (Sounds fun doesn’t it?)

* 8 Eggs
* 4 1/2 tablespoons Mayonnaise
* 6 large Letuce leaves
* 16 Pimento stuffed olives
* 1 tablespoon Chocolate sprinkles

1. Gently place the eggs in a saucepan and fill it with water until the eggs are just covered.
2. bring the water to a boil over high heat.
3. Turn the heat down to medium and allow to simmer for 10 minutes.
4. Remove the pan from the heat and carefully drain the water into the sink.
5. Cover the eggs with cold water and set aside for five minutes.
6. Gently crack the eggs against a hard surface, then carefully peel off the shells.
7. Slice each egg in half lengthwise.
8. With clean fingers, scoop out the yolks and put them in a small bowl.
9. Mash the yolks with a fork until they are crumbly.
10. Add mayonnaise and blend.
11. Carefully fill the empty egg whites with yolk mixture.
12. Cover a platter with lettuce leaves, setting a leaf or two aside for garnish.
13. Arrange the egg halves, YOLK SIDE DOWN, on the leaves. These are your mice bodies.
14. To give them each eyes and a nose, pull the pimento out of an olive and cut it into three small sections
15. cut thirty two thin, lengthwise strips from several of the green olives.
16. Stick two of these strips end to end onto the back end of the mouse to form the tail.
17. Out of the remaining olives, cut thirty two small triangular ear pieces and any other mice parts you might desire

To garnish: Tear small pieces of lettuce and position in front of the mice’s mouths as if they have been noshing.

  • 2 lbs. lean ground beef  
  • 1 1/2 cups seasoned bread crumbs
  • 2 tbsp. ketchup
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp. fresh basil or 1 tsp. dried
  • 1 7-oz. jar pimiento-stuffed olives
  • 1 26-oz. jar prepared pasta sauce
  • 1 lb. spaghetti
  • 1 tbsp. olive oil

Kids will love the gross-out factor of this tasty finger food. Parents will love the fact that it is candy-free. Try some for a party or pre-trick-or-treating dinner.

Part of the fun of Halloween, is the lead up to the actual day. Here are some super fun activities that you can do with your kids to keep the excitement, fun, and family time building.

  1. Pumpkin Carving – Go and get some really cool pumpkin stencils and some big ol pumpkins and make it a carving contest!!

  2. Bobbing for Apples – Doing this at your halloween party, or Fall festival.  One of the oldest and most traditional games of the season.
  3. Halloween Carnivals – Many schools have Halloween Carnival with fun, and food and scary games.
  4. Watch Scary Movies – Get a few to watch with the kids, and then for the more daring a few more for after they’ve gone to bed.
  5. Fall Festivals – Find a Corn Maze.  We have one a few miles out of town.  Groups can rent it, and roast hotdogs, and marsh mellows, go on  hay rides, and go thru the maze…. so much fun!!!
  6. Let the Tweens  have a supervised Party at Home – This could be a very fun and safe alternative to the older kids going out for candy.
  7. Go to a Haunted House – OooooOOOO  Can you and your kids handle the spookies?
  8. Decorate the Yard – Create your own Halloween Theme!
  9. Halloween Party at your Church
  10. Tweens can Hand out the Candy
